Win-Win!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t help but think with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, poor posture is like another pandemic \u2014 but this one has been around much longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Home Working and Posture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of us who work in an office, you\u2019ll already be aware of the hazards faced when sitting for long periods of time. Employers often provide suitable chairs, wrist supports and footrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when homeworking, it\u2019s easy to forget these things. <strong>Yes, you can set up your workstation however you want \u2014 but your employer still has a duty of care to you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And how many businesses have thought about following DSE (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations remotely?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During training sessions, I highlight posture constantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Around 50% of people on my courses report aches and pains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>90% admit they <strong>don\u2019t think about posture at all<\/strong> during working hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens If We Don\u2019t Think About Posture?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)<\/strong> are one of the main causes of sickness absence.<br>Common problems include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Repetitive strain injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower back pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shoulder and neck aches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve known about these issues for decades \u2014 and yet most of us still suffer from MSDs at some point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employers\u2019 Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers can\u2019t stop their staff from ageing \u2014 but they <strong>can take practical steps<\/strong> outlined in the <strong>Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If staff use a computer, laptop, tablet or phone for extended periods, employers must assess the risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practical investments can reduce absence and injury:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adjustable chairs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Footrests or pedals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suitable lighting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wrist and mouse supports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about <strong>ergonomics<\/strong> \u2014 fitting the workstation to the person. This is where <strong>DSE training<\/strong> comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Homeworking and DSE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re working at home, employers still have a duty of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommendations for employers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide or arrange DSE training (required under regulations).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a DSE risk assessment for each homeworking staff member.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make reasonable adjustments where practicable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practical actions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow employees to use work equipment at home (chairs, mouse, wrist pads, monitor risers).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage frequent breaks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower or adapt performance targets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage non-work activities and movement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advise staff not to use their couch as a workstation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide seat cushions or posture aids if needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Last time I checked, a good cushion was around <strong>\u00a327.00 (July 2020)<\/strong> \u2014 affordable for any employer and excellent for posture.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sit-to-Stand Desks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For workplaces, <strong>height-adjustable desks<\/strong> (or \u201csit-to-stand\u201d desks) are brilliant for improving posture and reducing strain during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal Responsibility Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of work \u2014 consider the activities that put strain on your body:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sports and hobbies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gardening<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Running or climbing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking after your posture benefits all of these too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t think about posture either until tennis caused me shoulder issues. After advice from my physio, I started leaving <strong>post-it reminders<\/strong> and <strong>phone pop-ups<\/strong> to remind myself about posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your employer has a duty of care \u2014 but <strong>you also have personal responsibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Do Stretches Come In?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Wow!
