{"id":1576,"date":"2025-10-21T11:47:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/influence360training.co.uk\/?p=1576"},"modified":"2025-10-21T11:47:54","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:47:54","slug":"defibrillators-could-you-use-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/influence360training.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/10\/21\/defibrillators-could-you-use-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Defibrillators \u2013 Could You Use One?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Fears Around Defibrillators<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you know how to use a defibrillator?<br>Most clients in my First Aid classes admit they <strong>wouldn\u2019t touch it with a barge pole<\/strong> \u2014 and their reasons are usually the same:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cWhat if I do it wrong?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhat if I kill them?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cI\u2019ll get sued.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cI\u2019m not trained.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All legitimate objections to a machine that can deliver up to 1000 volts depending on what the heart is doing at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They\u2019re <strong>already in cardiac arrest<\/strong>, so it can\u2019t get any worse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re <strong>highly unlikely to get sued<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chances are you\u2019ll do a good job just by following the defibrillator\u2019s simple instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most people aren\u2019t trained \u2014 and that\u2019s OK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If a defibrillator was too complex to use, they wouldn\u2019t be <strong>dotted around communities for public use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defibrillators Are All Around You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the chance that where you live or work, there\u2019s one mounted on a wall? They\u2019re usually <strong>bright green or yellow<\/strong>, easy to spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next time you see one \u2014 go take a look. Can you read the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cTO OPEN IN AN EMERGENCY\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Call 999<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep calm &amp; follow instructions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell the operator where you are (location code on the black box)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell the operator the unlock code<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get back quickly to where CPR is being performed<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Think you could manage that? Easy to say here, I know \u2014 but if you stay focused on your <strong>actions<\/strong>, not your fear, you\u2019re already doing something heroic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Built to Be Simple<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>use of a defibrillator<\/strong> is now a <strong>mandatory part<\/strong> of the syllabus for First Aid training courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I teach defibrillation, everyone can see how simple it is to <strong>switch it on<\/strong> \u2014 it\u2019s common sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it\u2019s just about following the instructions. Learners consistently do well with the key steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2705 <strong>Correct pad placement<\/strong> \u2014 follow the machine\u2019s diagrams (often lit up) so it can accurately analyse the heart rhythm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u26a1 <strong>Stand clear when instructed<\/strong> \u2014 if anyone is touching the casualty during analysis or shock, the defib can detect multiple heartbeats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Defibrillators are <strong>expert at heart analysis<\/strong>. When the heart goes into <strong>ventricular fibrillation<\/strong> (sudden cardiac arrest), it can kill \u2014 but a defib can shock it back into a normal rhythm. It also knows when there\u2019s no rhythm at all, which is why it\u2019s called a <strong>de-fibrillator<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teamwork: First Aider + Defib<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On courses, I always highlight the importance of <strong>people working together with the machine<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The defib can analyse rhythms and shock the heart.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The First Aider can check breathing, perform CPR if the shock doesn\u2019t work, and provide support the machine can\u2019t.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, they give the casualty the best chance of survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They All Work the Same Way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many models of defibrillators, but they all:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use <strong>slow, clear instructions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Repeat commands<\/strong> until you\u2019ve completed the step<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are <strong>designed for untrained people<\/strong> to operate safely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Learners almost always finish the session saying they wouldn\u2019t hesitate to use one \u2014 once they realise how simple it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn Life-Saving Skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <strong>First Aid courses<\/strong> teach more than theory \u2014 they teach real, practical life-saving skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If face-to-face courses don\u2019t sound appealing because of COVID, our <strong>e-learning First Aid<\/strong> option is a convenient alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete theory modules online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arrange practical elements face-to-face with our tutors (approx. 90 minutes)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#\">Explore our First Aid courses here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t know about you, but if I saved a life\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>it\u2019s straight to the pub to celebrate how great I am. \ud83c\udf7b<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a defibrillator isn\u2019t complicated.<br>It\u2019s <strong>designed for you to use it<\/strong>.<br>And if it means saving a life \u2014 every second counts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Common Fears Around Defibrillators Would you know how to use a defibrillator?Most clients in my First Aid classes admit they wouldn\u2019t touch it with a barge pole \u2014 and their&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-1576","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-blog"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Defibrillators \u2013 Could You Use One?
